ES&M's Engineering Services at Construction of Macomber Stadium, Central Falls, RI

ES&M was retained by JH Lynch & Sons Inc, to assist with the construction of a new synthetic turf athletic field and green stormwater infrastructure as part of the Narragansett Bay Commission, Combined Sewer Overflow project at the site known as Macomber Stadium in Central Falls, RI.

Macomber Stadium, located at 964 High Street in Central Falls, Rhode Island, is a recreational sports facility owned by the City of Central Falls. The stadium property is surrounded by multiple former industrial buildings, many of which historically performed metals and textile manufacturing and finishing. Former New England Electrolytic Copper Co. buildings were once located in a corner of the subject property.  Historical use of the property, the management practices in place during that usage, and the long history of metals and textile manufacturing in the surrounding area resulted in undocumented releases of hazardous materials and impacts to soil.  Laboratory results from soil samples collected from below ground surface indicated metals and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) concentrations above RIDEM Method 1 Residential Direct Exposure Criteria (R-DEC).

The Macomber Field project included demolition and preparation of the site, disposal of contaminated soil, grading, construction of an underground infiltration system and other green stormwater infrastructure best management practices, construction of a new infilled synthetic turf system, stormwater systems, fencing, retaining walls, sidewalks and paving as part of the new modernized stadium. ES&M prepared the Health & Safety Plan (HASP) and the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) for the project. ES&M also calculated the volume of soil requiring disposal at the required facility, screened soils for contaminants using a PID, collected samples of contaminated soil for laboratory analysis, and prepared Generator Profile Sheets for soil disposal.
