Providence Bulk Storage Terminal
Assessment, Remediation and Related Environmental Services
Major Petroleum Corporation

Bulk Fuel Storage Terminal Project Description:
ES&M operates an oil recovery system and conducts site monitoring at a bulk storage terminal in Providence, Rhode Island.  The remediation strategy at this site includes oil skimming, groundwater pumping, soil vapor extraction, and air sparging to aggressively recover LNAPL and to reduce the concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater.

ES&M inherited a non-operational remediation system in May of 2005.  A host of upgrades were completed within the first two years of our involvement at the facility to bring the remediation system back on line and to optimize its performance.  The remediation program now utilizes automatic skimming pumps and top-loading, total fluid pumps to recover both groundwater and LNAPL.  Groundwater is treated and recharged onsite to avoid discharge permitting and compliance issues.  The soil vapor extraction system extracts soil vapor from several areas on site. To date more than 17,000 gallons of petroleum has been recovered by the oil recovery and SVE systems.

The final step in the remediation program will be the initiation of an air sparge system which will not be activated until most of the product has been removed from the subsurface soils.  This system will inject air into the subsurface below the water table.  This process will volatilize the residual volatile organic hydrocarbons which will then be captured on activated carbon.
